How to make your nail polish last?

Have you ever had the experience of spending a crazy amount of time applying your nail polish, but it starts to chip after just a few days? Annoying, isn’t it? If that’s the case, the nail expert Maryton will tell you some tips to finally know how to make your nail polish last!

Choose your nail polish carefully

To find out how to make your nail polish last longer, you first need to look at the nail polish itself. Avoid quick-drying nail polishes. Although they are practical, they are much less resistant.

Also remember to store your nail polishes away from light and heat, among other recommendations. This way, you extend their lifespan and their hold will remain stable for much longer.

Clean your nails well

To extend the life of the polish on your nails, you need clean hands beforehand. So wash your hands well and degrease the surface of the nail with a dissolvette and a little nail polish remover or white vinegar or cider vinegar. Thus, without any fatty residue, the varnish will be able to adhere better to the nail.

You can also lightly file (but really very lightly) the surface of your nails with a nail file so that the varnish adheres better. It’s also a good idea to opt for an electric nail file. A movement always in the same direction is more than enough.

Apply a base

The base is a necessary step to extend the life of your varnish. It is applied before the varnish and you must apply a thin layer. On the nail side, it helps it to better grip the color and protects it from the pigments (to prevent it from yellowing). While on the varnish side, it allows a more uniform application and improves its hold over time.

Strengthen the hold

Last step: we use a top coat, the final touch. This is a transparent layer of varnish that allows you to varnish the nail and make it more shock-resistant. After applying your top coat, wait about fifteen minutes before being able to use your ten fingers again.

Avoid hot water

To make a varnish last longer, avoid washing your hands with hot water for 12 hours after applying it. This will allow it to harden completely. Also, just after applying, run your hands under cold water to shorten the drying time.

Protect your hands with gloves

Finally, for a nail polish that really holds well, you have to protect your hands! These are still the parts of the body that are most in contact with different materials and textures. Your nails are therefore much more likely to get damaged.

So, put on your gloves! Especially if you do the dishes and housework to protect your hands from household products that can be very aggressive, but also from chlorine.

With these few tips to prolong the hold of your varnish, you are now ready to succeed in your home manicure. It will last as long as in a beauty salon, at least, we hope!
